- Tree: Cedrela trees may attain heights of 100 feet or more. The buttressed trees usually have trunks with diameters of 36 to 72 inches.
- Sapwood Color: The sapwood is pale and not sharply differentiated from the heartwood.
- Heartwood Color: Usually ranges from pale pinkish-brown to dark reddish-brown, darkening upon exposure.
- Grain: Generally straight or slightly interlocked.
- Texture: Moderately coarse. Luster: Varies from lustrous to very lustrous.
- Odor: Natural oils in the wood give off a distinctive fragrance.
- Movement: Dimensionally stable. Holds its shape very well after seasoning.
- Natural Durability: Heartwood has high natural resistance to decay. The sapwood is vulnerable to attack by powder-post beetles. Moderate to high resistance to termites.
- Working characteristics: Easily worked with both hand tools and machines.
- Strength Properties: Medium bending strength, much weaker than White oak or Teak.
- Resistance to compression parallel to grain is low. Surfaces may dent or scratch easily since the wood is soft. Weight and density are about average. Relative to weight, strength properties are generally high.

The term “soft maple” does not refer to any specific species of maple, but rather, it’s a broad term which includes several different species of maple. The term “soft maple” is merely used to differentiate these species from hard maple. Resembles Hard Maple being closed-grained but much softer. Easily worked. Accepts finish and paint well.Stock is cut to size from quality, kiln-dried stock. Dimensions are +- 1/8" grain runs with the longest dimension.You are purchasing one square blank 7/8" x 30". -

This curly soft maple is highly figured with tiger-striped rays running perpendicular to the grain pattern. Along with the wood's light color, this striping lends a shimmering quality to the lumber. Even unfinished, the wood has a very pleasing interaction with light. It is no surprise, then, that curly maple has become a woodworker's favorite for accents, specialty furniture, musical instruments, and more.To make the figure in this curly maple really "pop", we recommend using an oil product (tung, linseed, etc.), as opposed to a stain. If a lacquer or urethane finish is necessary, adding a coat or two of clear wax-free shellac before the final finishing will ensure that the figure stands out. -
